If you have a fireplace then you are well aware that the beautiful centerpiece of your room is also one of the most dangerous. After all, everyone has heard stories of homes and lives being lost due to a fireplace blaze. There are many ways that a fireplace fire can get out of hand. In order to best protect your and family from trauma as a result of a fireplace fire, there are many things you can do as part of routine troubleshooting. Here are just some of the dozens of common problems associated with fireplaces and what you can do to address them. Many of these are simple actions, but others may require the services of a chimney professional.

What to Do about a Smoking Fireplace

Smoke pouring into the room is a result of a closed damper, a cold flue or a blocked flue. This is solved by opening the damper, priming the flue and cleaning the chimney.

If the fireplace smokes only during a low burn there could several culprits. The causes and solutions are:

Exterior chimney and cold flue-install fireplace doors Chimney is too short - Add height to the chimney, this might best be done by a professional. Flue is too large - Add a sleeve. House is depressurized - Have an outside air source installed Air space between the chimney liner and the casing is too large- Re-line the chimney flue with an insulated liner

If there is constant smoke spillage, regardless of the level of the fire then it is likely a result of 1 or more issues. Typically these issues a will be: the house is depressurized, the smoke chamber is too small, the flu is too small or the damper is too low. These can be corrected by installing an outside air source, installing a smoke guard or fireplace doors and reducing fireplace openings. 

If the fireplace smokes on damp, windy or rainy days it usually the result of the chimney either being too short, not having a cap on the chimney or that the flue is wet and cold. This is corrected by lengthening the chimney, installing a chimney cap and to "repair" a wet/cold flue prime the flue, and apply a water repellant.

If, when your fireplace is used, smoke enters another room of the house or another story of your home, here are some possible causes and solutions to consider:

Check the downdraft in an unused second flue - Seal the flue Downdrafts in the second fireplace - Install a top-sealing damper(s) Breaks between adjoining liners - Re-line the chimney Inadequate chimney cap height - Replace or raise the cap the cut tiles to correct the height above the chimney's crown

At lunch the other day, I watched one of my students, Carrie, eat three hot dogs and two slices of pizza. I was surprised because just last week my student who is quite big in size was making comments about how she could never lose weight. She refused to recognize that she had a problem with her portions and what appeared to me to be a lack of physical activity. Instead, she told me that it wasn't the food or her constant desire for sleep that kept her heavy but rather it was her mother's fault. She said that her mother was big, and her mother's mother was big so she knew she was going to be big.

As a biology teacher, my students ask me a lot about genetics. Now I had a young overweight girl telling me that she was big because of her genes. Sure if your parents are overweight, this might slightly increase your chance of being overweight, but genes are not the only cause of obesity. Much of the weight that people carry is a result of their lifestyle choices.

Your lifestyle preferences greatly affect a person's weight. How active are you? Do you go through the drive-thru or do you park you car and go inside? Will you drive two blocks to the store instead of walking? If you are physically active every day, then you are less likely to be obese.

Our home habits are affecting our weight. Sitting at home and watching television for eight hours is not going to burn that many calories, especially when you're a television chipper, someone who always has to have chips or popcorn nearby when they're watch television. People who are tied to their desks throughout the day are also not as active as they should be.

If you don't want to be overweight, these are some of the bad habits that you have to break if you want to lose weight, and this has nothing to do with genes. You have to get active (off the bed, off the couch, and away from the desk), and you have to eat food that is low in calories and good for you. If you exercise daily, eat small portions several times a day, and drink lots of water, you won't have to wonder about how you became obese anymore. It won't be an issue because after a period of living right, you won't be overweight anymore. You'll be living right and light.

Gasification of wood is a simple technology that introduces secondary air to the falling ash which superheats it and combusts the ash and wood smoke to a point where there is very little left. The process is extremely efficient and gets the most energy out of a log of wood whilst leaving little ash to clean out.

Gasification is a process for burning wood where the gases from the wood are burned at very high temperatures, and although it was used extensively 50 to 100 years ago, since the advent of cheap oil in the late 1950s and 1960s it has been largely ignored.

Gasification works both at a very simple level in wood stoves and in huge gen stations feed megawatts of power into national electricity grids. For some time the big generators like GE have recognised this and have been developing the highly technologically sophisticated Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) Generator, since multi-millions of dollars into the idea.

However, until very recently society had forgotten the fact that gasification can also be sued at the domestic stove level and bring big efficieny and smoke emissions reduction benefits at the same time.

In a simple wood gasifier ingenious design (or a small electric fan in many designs) causes a downdraft which produces extreme heat up to 2000 degrees igniting all gases including smoke and creosote therefore giving almost 100% efficiency. The gasification effect works by way of the downdraft that sucks wood gas from the firebox in the top chamber down into a bottom chamber where superheated combustion occurs.

Biomass gasification extend the idea from wood stoves, where there are a number of products now on the market inot using a huge range of available fuels, not just wood. In its current state the use of biomass, is open-source and grassroots. Many people are cobbling together gasifiers and they are normal JoeâEUR(TM)s and JaneâEUR(TM)s. What you or I would call backyard tinkerers! But, we should all be grateful to them because this technology needs wrestling away from the boffins and the multi-millions dollar corporations. It is just too important for the health of the planet that at all levels society uses the renewable energy freely availabe to us, to its fullest.

Biomass gasification projects could be of interest under the CDM (Carbon Discharge Management âEUR" or carbon Credits within the scheme dreamt up at the Kyoto summit years ago) because the renewable biomass energy used directly displaces greenhouse gas emissions while contributing to sustainable rural development.

However, amazingly until recently there was only one biomass gasifier project registered under the CDM as yet, among thousands of other schemes.

Biomass gasification is a renewable, low cost and environmentally friendly energy alternative to using carbonaceous fuels like oil and coal or natural gas. Biomass energy has evolved since its first applications, but in general the sad fact is that until now it has not been possible to reach a solid commercial stage, except during periods of crises and only for some specific applications.

Meanwhile, other gasification technologies, fed by fossil fuels, have received big invetsment and are currently widely used on industrial scales, for example in refineries enabling poor quality and even waste oils which traditional refineries have no use for to be utilized.

Biomass gasification certainly works, and it worked 20 years ago. It is just been seen as a capital-intensive process that has the problem of competing against lower cost (but unsustainable) gasification options, and too complex to be used in the small scale.

Now at least the back garage tinkerers have gasifiers under development which will with their inspired skills and ability to innovate, have every prospect of rescuing this technology from the boffins by producing small cheap and amazingly efficient boilers using all sorts of fuels at present unused and wasted.

For my money I say three cheers for these guys and girls not afraid to get their hands dirty, roll up their sleeves and make so much more than any stove which can make tea!
